Man, I wonder... do people even read Steemit posts these days?

Maybe it's just me, I haven't been as active on the platform lately... But it seems like video content has almost completely cannibalized written blog content.

And I enjoy writing, but it's a little discouraging when I have 1700 followers, and 10 of the 15 replies on a post are from automated bot accounts.

I was feeling good about Steemit when I signed up, but I think the monetization of the platform is the main driver of its user's engagement, and not quality content.

I also have an issue with whale monopolization.

Big accounts naturally earn more, but rarely give it back.

I know @trevonjb is powering down and selling off his STEEM. Makes me wonder if I should do the same?

@trevonjb is an interesting case study, as I think his success is based off his willingness to give away information, and crypto earned, for free.

Well, I'll start with this post. I'll send the best comment 5 STEEM.

"Best" could mean, most thought out, or driver of additional conversation. I guess it's about quality versus quantity, and not whether you agree with me or not.

And then I wonder, if I should double down on producing quality content, and triple down on engaging with the community, and that my cynicism may change?

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

@mikev

Sadly as of late I have to agree with you while I still read posts and actually prefer written posts to video it definitely look like video is taking over but more alarming is the bots but what are you going to do I still enjoy the platform and would love to see it succeed

Disclaimer. Thiz wont be the best comment.

I agree with you completely. I look around and all I see is whales upvoting themselves and other whales. It feels like a private club. Your rich, one of the elite, or your one of those 'other people' perhaps I take it too far.

But a whale can earn 75% from there own upvoted post. Then spend some of there remaining steem power upvoting other whales to get a big part of that other 25%.

Making money hand over fist. Id like to suggest if each whale could upvote one minnow once per day for good content, thst would really help and raise moral.
Thanks

@mikev, I share your concern except I am just starting out on Steemit. I'm a bit hesitant to spend too much time crafting great articles or putting my best content on Steemit as I am not totally convinced that this is the way forward for me.

I am also trying to build up a few blogs on the side and I feel like my energy and focus is best spent there.

Life is too short and spending hours a day interacting with bots and earning pennies isn't worth it. Having said that though, there are people here making some decent passive income, but I still haven't got my head around what the trick is.

I can see immediately from the way that you write that you aren't one of those spammers who writes just for the sake of it. And glad to read that there are people here that do enjoy writing!

I was thinking about Steemit today and got a "deja vu" moment from when I was 16 years old, desperate to make a quick buck and signed up for loads of online survey websites. I invested hours into it and was earning pennies. :)

I am going to give Steemit a shot until end of this year and then decide whether I'll power down, cash out and then invest my energy on something bigger or whether i can really stick with Steemit and build decent passive income using this platform. The concept is great because I love writing but then having a self-hosted blog or using Medium and taking the time to build up your email list and followers that really read your content and engage with you is far more rewarding.. Not to mention, it could lead to things like online courses, ebooks or training material which you can monetise to make a decent living! I'm torn between two worlds :)

If you have any tips for Steemit or Lessons Learnt that you could share with me, I'd be really happy to hear what you have to say. Cheers!!

I agree....And in my opinion ...Bots role at Steemit is alarming , everybody is in race and therefore adapting materialistic approach ...bots are one way or another discourages the readers/viewers and also quality content writers ....another alarming scene is Behaviour of Whales .....they are not giving enough to majority of steemit members that are Minnows and redfish such attitudes discourage the newbies at very start...
Top Whales and developers must consider such points to make steemit community more Prosperous

Anyway Good Luck to all Steemit Community Members

Despite having joined during the August awareness spike (ironically via reddit) under what I now consider fundamentally false pretexts of this platform offering to serve as a reddit-like meritocracy... I continually find myself revisiting my steemit/resource-bookmarks/personal-notes as a sort of curiosity-crack-addict; constantly idealizing the seeds of potential evident in steemit and the current 'community' it has created will someday sprout the true meritocracy-system I was 'sold on'

Perhaps my constant offline contemplation of the functional meritocracy implementation of STEEM within my own content interests/design is what keeps me investing time here as a lurker instead of a creator/publisher of my own video works.

Fundamentally I've already reached the disappointing conclusion that steem's economic mechanics aren't sustainable (let alone 'fair')... there's just so many factors I consider points of failure (in terms of accomplishing use-outcomes) that its not worth the effort of attempting to participate in the community's solution-debate. Maybe i'll end up changing my mind and affixing my various notes into a public proposal, but I know there's enough 'insider experiences' from those who are active on steem that'll outweigh any 'outsider insights' I feel are important/potential solutions.

The confounding complexity of all STEEM+STEEMit+SMT implementation(s) as direct & indirect 'design choices' has led me to my present back-and-forth sentiment on the value/future of the platform, cynically remaining merely worthwhile case-study/gem-of-nature that remains beneficially as spectator witnessing (& considering) its evolution as it relates to my perhaps differing ambitions for meritocracy Content with a capital 'C' online.

Like with the whole of culture on our strange little planet, there's far more going on than one can ever become realistically aware, let alone appreciative of, despite the revolution the internet's speed for connectivity; HOWEVER it is the 'journey' of reaching a internet-powered meritocracy for digitally distributive 'talent' that will always serve (at least philosophically) as my justifications around the endless mental-masturbation on the current state of this particular implementation we call STEEM.

Nice post, I have to agree with you, I prefer writing over video for this platform format, and definitely can't stand all the bots. Something that troubles me is, while I haven't authored a post in almost two weeks, I have gained 20 followers. Is it all bots?
