OVERCAST

two ponds split like eyes
a crane walks between the gaze
rain ripples the stare

GLISTEN

summer seas ashore
morning glistening off sand;
stray dogs roam the beach—

PROMENADE

high clouds reflected
in the lily-padded pond—
water star-freckled

DOUBLE

horizon mirrored
in the glasslike bay water—
summer sees its face

STRAY

an amber mist hangs
light rain beneath a streetlight
dog lays in the haze

RIVERSIDE

cicadas sing dusk;
evening breeze whips coldly
sky’s high gaze churns mauve

FOLLOW

damp path stretches on
towards the unfurling blue night—
following sunset

RAINY SEASON

eating persimmons
from the comfort of the porch;
lightning gnarls its teeth

GOOD MORNING

o! morning singers
piercing songs through my odd dreams:
red-breasted chorus

WA-WA

fifty bullfrogs croak
two ponds dream before moon-trees
cicadas wa-wa

GRAY NOON

rain even in sun
droplets beading on branches
owl’s lonesome hooting

KING

laying in the reeds
like a stray that has no home;
o! king of nothing

AH

petal-scented gust
stirs through the moonlit garden—
ah, stirring me too

ALABAMA

Two cardinals dance
over the dreaming bloodgrass—
rain is approaching
