The quetzal is in danger of extinction and few remain in Central America. However, in Costa Rica its population is larger, thanks to the protection that the country has given its forests.

With its bright colors, especially emerald and turquoise tones, and a tail that in males reaches up to 65 centimeters in length, the quetzal is one of the iconic species of Costa Rica. Its distribution range extends from southern Mexico to Panama. It is the national bird of Guatemala and gives its currency its name.

Its name comes from the Aztec word ‘quetzalli’, which means precious or beautiful. The Maya believed that the Quetzal was the "god of the air" and a symbol of lightness. In many cultures it is a crime to kill a Quetzal.

Eat mainly fruits of the avocado family, which start in flight, the Quetzal is a true omnivore, since it also feeds insects, lizards, frogs and other small animals. The half-life of Quetzal can live from 20 to 25 years.
