Visiting a Sustainable Jamaican Cacao Farm

in #sustainable7 years ago

Yesterday I had the incredible experience of visiting a Cacao farm in St. Thomas, Jamaica called Bachelor’s Hall Estate. Desmond, the farmer, sells his beans to chocolatiers in the US, Canada and the UK who’ve won awards for bars made with his beans.

Desmond has a BIG heart and he knows how to treat the earth well. He’s fought for his land and he continues to be a warrior of love for the earth and the Cacao. Never using chemicals to grow the Cacao, he is a true steward of the land. He honors the value of fertile, rich soil and works for the health of the people.

What a beautiful experience to be in the presence of the Cacao trees! I explored the groves of Cacao trees and found green, yellow and purple Cacao pods. We ate some fresh beans straight out of the pod, still encased in the white fleshly sweet and sour husk. The fresh beans are bright and purple inside, and much chewier than the hard beans and nibs that many of us are more familiar with.

Together we’re working to enliven a healthy Jamaican Cacao international market, making sure the farmers here get paid for their work because Jamaican Cacao is some of the best in the world!

Cacao fruit tastes so good. I really like it. Plus it makes chocolate. As one of the editors for @steemitworldmap’s daily #traveldigest, I would love to see this post pop up on http://steemitworldmap.com. If you're interested, simply go to the website, search for your location, click on code (down the bottom) and add a short description. It will then generate the code you need to copy and paste into your post (not the comments) to have it show up on steemit worldmap. Then your post will be on the map! There’s also a FAQ section if you need it.

Hey @choogirl I'd love to participate, but the map isn't working well for me. When I click on "code" it doesn't give me a space to add the description, nor does it generate a code. Also nothing happens when I click the FAQ.

Hmm. I don't know why this would be happening. Let me get @martibis to respond to you.

Thanks! I've been traveling and away from wifi, back online now so can try again with any tips on how to make it work this time :)

Heya, can you tell me what browser you're using so I can take a closer look into it?

I have heard it happen before, but I haven't yet been able to reproduce the error!

I'm using Chrome.

Hey @lizblake- I need you to contact me on Discord- you won last week's seed exchange- congratulations!

or email me at dandawne1@gmail.com thanks!

Whoa, amazing!! I'll email you. I'm on an eco-village in Jamaica and the internet connection is limited here... which is why I haven't been as active on Steemit these past few days. I'll email you! Thanks for reaching out!
