Brother-zoned, worse than friend-zone
Have you heard about friend-zone? Of course.The term is quiet familiar. But have you heard about brother-zoned? Maybe. And I have seen it once.
It was during my birthday. I was having dinner with my wife in a caffee. The caffee is different with common caffee. The first floor of the caffee, is a common coffee shop, serving affordable food for the student, like noodle, fried rice or traditional cake. But the second floor, has its own cook. The second floor serves expensive food. We were on the second floor. The waitress serve us delicious food. We spent some time after enjoying our dinner to talk and laugh. We were having a great time together.
Beside us, there was (i supposed) a couple. A male and female student. The female looks beautiful, wearing fancy clothes. She already ate the food served by the second floor caffee, which is expensive for student’s standard. While the male one looks very ordinary, wearing only a simple t-shirt.
In front of the female student, there was a laptop. They were talking quiet, but we could hear a little bit of what they were talking about. Looks like it is about the project work of the female student.
You can get the impression that the male student was the smarter one. He is older than the lady, maybe one-two year older. The male student teach the female student about everything. How to write every chapter, the analysis, how to calculate complicated formula etc. He proofread the lady’s work. The female student seems so illuminated by the smart explanation of the male student. Moreover, they look comfortable to each other.
After finish teaching the female student, they close the laptop. Then they talk, laugh. They were like a couple.
It was at one point the male student suddenly become silent. Looks like he is encouraging himself to say something important to the lady. Finally, the guy say a word. It was unclear. But the lady was at first so shocked. The guy waited the lady’s respond. The lady suddenly laugh and said : “are you kidding me? We are just like brother and sister, right?”
The guy was suddenly in silent. Clearly brokenhearted. The lady face at first seems guilty. Then the guy just did not talk anymore. The situation is suddenly grim.
Not long after that, the guy say that he will order a food. I thought the guy was going to order the food from the second floor. No, it is not. He walked down the stairs to the first floor then go back to his seat. Not long after that, a waiter come with menu consist only rice and sauced fish, which is very cheap. The guy eat like he is having the most delicious food in the word. He even jokingly ask the lady whether she would try it. But, she looks upset.
After the guy finish eating, the lady looks more and more upset. She looks like that she is not even interested about their “date” anymore. The guy innocently asked ; “are you ok? Are you having headache?” It is unbelievable how much the guy care about the lady even after he was brokenhearted. But it is no longer matter, isn’t it? He was already brother-zoned.
The guy take care of her, teach her about the study, but there is no lover’s love between them simply because if the lady consider him as a brother, of course there is no chance of them to marry maybe someday.
There is friend zone, a situation where a lady only wants to be a friend with a close male friend. But, principally of course you can still marry a friend. But, brotherzoned, the chance for the lady to marry the guy is like…zero! Because principally it is impossible for a lady to marry her own brother.
I and my wife feel sorry for the guy. It seems so clear that he cares about the lady. But as the lady said, he is just a brother for her. For her, he is closer than a best friend, but he is not someone to love. No chance at all.
