SPOTLIGHT

in #story6 years ago

Nowadays, in a bunch of low-budget cheesy not funny movies, it is quite rare finding a really good, meaningful movie with a powerful message. Luckily, a few days ago, I managed to find a 2016 Academy Award winner - Spotlight that kept me attached to the screen for the whole two hours. It’s a biographical drama (not a genre I am usually interested in) about a group of journalists investigating a longterm child abuse in the Catholic Church. It is directed by Tom McCarthy and the cast includes Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Liev Schreiber and Stanley Tucci.

Break the story, break the silence!

The truth is usually hard to swallow, but this movie shows us that we can’t just close our eyes and ignore it. Also, it reminds us what is the journalism supposed to be about and how the press should use its power to speak the truth, tell the story exactly how it is and sometimes even change our lives.

The decades-long child sexual abuse by the priests in Boston is one of the biggest cover-ups in the modern history. The investigation started with just one priest who has been reported for molesting many children a few years ago, but soon they realized it is so much more than just one guy. They had to „break“ the whole system. The biggest question was whether or not the cardinal of the Catholic Church – Bernard Francis Law knew what was happening. What made their investigation more difficult is the fact that the police along with some lawyers were aware of the abuse but decided to hush it and dismiss all the charges. After a lot of digging, they came to the conclusion that 6% of all the Boston priests were involved in the abuse. Believe or not, that’s almost 90 people!

They began to interview the victims (now adults) who were willing to help to stop the abuse by sharing their traumatic experiences. It is very hard listening to their stories especially when you know the whole movie is actually based on a true story. The priests’ targets were mainly boys from poor families who needed a father figure.

After collecting all the information, all they had to do was write a story and publish it. Whether or not they succeeded – watch the movie and see!

It opens up a question of faith. These children are born and raised in Catholic families, they go to Church every Sunday morning, they believe in God, they pray. So the priest is someone they trust. And that is the key. That is their advantage.

I hope you like my post!
