Steemit Statistics & Big Data: 🚀 End of December 2018 Update 🚀

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Thanks to ALL of you, Steemit is alive!

We reached 11.93 mn visits in December!

There is an important difference between total visitors to a site and unique ones. In this case the 11.93mn include the multiple times a person visited the website.

Therefore, as a good Steemian you probably connect everyday which will make you count for a total of 30 visits.
Therefore, how many "unique users" does Steemit has?

This is a very important question that I will try to answer later on. According to the Beta Analysis from the website I use to compile these datas, it is around 6,85mn !

One quick word about the Methodology

  • Datas can come from multiple sources listed in the end of this post
  • These sources get their raw datas from companies working with them and sharing their datas in order to get access to competitor's ones, browsers add-ons, in-app softwares which allow the Big Data to have a very large panel of users (north of 20mn) in order to statistically have the number of users/visits…
  • I use these raw datas to make excels tables, graphs…

I] Traffic

Daily Steemit Traffic

In January, we experienced the best daily numbers at 1.5mn+; they decreased a little under 1.5mn in February.
Unfortunately the daily traffic on Steemit slowed down to c.400 000 in December 2018. Let’s hope it is just a little setback
Another, explanation could be that people spend more time on apps (Partiko, Steepshot, Dtube, eSteem…) which are not accounted in this analysis.

Steemit website is ranked 4,119 worldwide
Steemit is ranked 2,854 in the US
Steemit kept on deteriorating its ranking as it ranked 1400+ last year.

Google Trends

Google Trend is an Indice based on 100, which means that 100 represents the week when most people searched for "Steemit" on Google.

Steemit Traffic share by country

In the Top 5, the strongest traffic decline came from Venezuela with -24.75% visits!

Mobile Traffic is stable compared to last month as it represents 45.47% of the total

This is useful to know how people use the Steem platform. Initiatives like Partiko (mobile app), eSteem (mobile app), Busy.org, SteepShot (Instagram), Zappl (Twitter like), utopian-io… will probably help the community to grow on mobile phones.

Be Careful with the Number of Visits

Also, remember that if you connect from a different device (home/work computer, mobile phone, tablet) you will count as a "new visitor" on each of these devices.

So as an example, let's say you connected at home, at work and in the subway. You would represent 3 visits out of these 1mn+ Daily Visits.

II] Marketing Mix

Organic Search is once again improving and represents 54,1% of the incoming Traffic.
Organic search is when people research on Google. As the number of quality bloggers on Steemit increase, our content has a higher probability of being listed in Google's Top results.

Different Channels:

Direct: When you type in you Web browser www.steemit.com
Mail: When you connect to steemit.com through an e-mail link
Referrals: When you connect to steemit.com through a link found on another website (github...)
Social: When you connect to Steemit through a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram... page or link
Organic Search: When you type a search term like "Crypto" on Google and you click on one of the following steemit link proposed to you

Traffic Share Evolution since inception of this analysis

The Organic Search Strategy which means the Content Strategy is working as people come across Steemit looking for Crypto, Blog, Travel, etc… related articles.

Referring Social Pages

Twitter represents 15,7% of all the social platform incoming traffic. Reddit is also a strong source of new visits on the Steemit Platform. Last week, Facebook was the first Social Media to bring traffic to Steemit.com with a 30.4% contribution.

5 most searched terms on Google that leads to Steemit.com

What are Steemians main interests?

Gender Demographics

Age Distribution

III] Steemit website metrics

You feel a bit confused about these 3 metrics? Let me explain.

  • Bounce Rate is the % of people that leave the Website after just navigating on a single Webpage. The lower, the Better
  • Daily Pageviews per Visitor is the average number of pages a visitor opens. The Higher, the Better
  • Daily Time on Site is the full time a visitor spend on the website before closing the internet Webpage. The Higher the Better

My December assumptions

  • Total visits to Steemit.com: 11,93mn
  • Assumption of Total unique visitors in December: 6.3-7mn
  • Total Daily visitors: 300-400k
  • Assumption of Total Daily Unique visitors: 225-275k

This is a collective achievement and I would like to congratulate all of us! We need to do better and get back to the January 2018's type of numbers.

What do you think of this Steemit Big Data Update? Please let me know in the comment section.

Hi @vlemon

Thank you for contributing to utopian-io.

A lot of metrics on Steemit here! And nicely presented also.

The report is structured very similar to last month's report which is fine, but we do feel that it is more of a presentation than a piece of analysis.

The guidelines for the category include a requirement to show code/proof of authorship, and it seems that much of the graphs are taken from elsewhere. This is also fine with relevant sources, but also reduces the chance of uncovering new findings/angles, and cuts into the proof of work/scripts that are used during the analysis.

In future, it would be good to see comparisons against data captured/presented in previous reports, and more analysis/discussion based around this.

And as pointed out by other comments, it would be interesting to see how including other apps and also "Steem" in general would affect the results, although this would be a time-consuming task.

Thanks again for your submission

Hello @abh12345,

First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read my post and write such a detailed comment.

I would more certainly take your comments into account for the next piece which will focus on dapps and other websites. I have new ideas to add more analysis into these kind of posts.

I am glad you liked it and hopefully you will also find the next one interesting.

Best,

@vlemon

No problem, all part of a days work :)

Looking forward to your next contribution!

Thank you for your review, @abh12345! Keep up the good work!

This is an amazing article.

great stuff. Resteemed.
It would be nice to see this done for the apps too as not everyone uses steemit.com and the use of apps is growing

we get a lot of organic traffic, I think with a push we could improve the traffic from traditional social media too. we just need to get more people to share across platforms.

I would love to see stats for my own content on steem. as a blogger off steem, knowing my traffic, where is come from and what articles are most successful is of vital importance to my business. if people really want to make a living using steem as the publishing platform, this information would really help.

Im also surprised with the age profile, I thought it would be a little older

Thank you for your comment, I plan to make other analysis on top Steem dapps but it is time consuming so I cannot do it too often 😉.

We definitely need to improve the audience and bring more people in. good content writers !

I hope to see you around and thank you for your Resteem and Upvotes.

Well, the count of over 6mn unique users seems pretty high to me and I did not get exactly how you came to that. Seems the bell of daily active users is quite narrower than I imagined... but I understand my bias, I think.

The stats by country were also quite unexpected for somebody like me, looking from his own point of view only. I see a lot of Australia, the South-East of Asia and South Africa, also.

Will try to catch more of your future stats ;)

Hello @manoldonchev,
Thank you for your comment. A unique user can be one person browsing the internet, going on google.com and reaching a steemit link just once during the month. Most of the incoming traffic comes from organic research (from google or other providers).

Indeed, everyone has its own bias depending on its location and language.

Thank you for Following me.

Have a great monday.

Yeah, I realized some of that while I was typing. Thanks for the clarification!

Have a great day as well!

Really great break down, 12 mil visits is not too bad I wonder how much ad revenue it brings in. If lets say if the average is 2 page views per visit, 2 ad positions thats 4 impressions per user and 48 million impressions at an average CPM of $1.7 that would be a large chunk of change for steemit

Hello there, I am not sure it brings as revenues as Steemit is not doing any add on its website.
Maybe they should to increase marketing and develop the Steem community.
Who knows...

Even if the Steemitdotcom were to allow ads that could be turned on or off it would be good for the ecosystem.

The high age range are probably millennials living in their parents basements, with no job, trying to make money blogging. (jk) You posted some very interesting numbers. This will be very helpful with my posts to a specific age range. Thank you for this data.

Or retirees like myself trying to survive in between fixed income disbursements...lom.

What a great analysis, thanks a lot for all this info. It had been a while since I had time to read an article, I am not leaving feeling like someone had just stole some of my precious time. Excellent job, thank you!!!

Namasté :)

It's clear numbers are going down but then a lot of traffic is spread out to other and new dApp! But once prices go up again, it will explode!

I can only agree with you.
We have the different dapps that would allow this ecosystem to explode ! Can’t wait for it 😉

Despite the declines seen over the year, the data continues to demonstrate the capability of the Steem blockchain to create interest. While this only represents probably only half of the total activity on the blockchain, it could continue to entice developers to create projects for the ecosystem which continues to expand and also become more decentralized. The fact that metrics decreased should not be a surprise given the performance of cryptocurrencies in general. Thanks for the effort and sharing!

Indeed, I am actually surprised by how many stuck around (myself included) during this near market.
We are clearly laying the foundations for when a new bull run might happen.
Thank you 🙏 for your thoughtful comment, I hope to see you around soon !
