Steemit Iron Chef 2017 #05: Pickled Pear AppetisersteemCreated with Sketch.

So here we are and another week passed by.

This turned out pretty well if you ask me. An entire pot of pears was made and those uneaten are currently in a jar awaiting the dreaded workplace potluck.

What you need

  • pears
  • white vinegar
  • water
  • organic cane sugar
  • cloves
  • one star anise
  • cinnamon sticks
  • whatever you want to make your cracker out of
  • coconut oil
  • honey
  • flour
  • blue cheese
  • garnish

It's pretty simple. You know I'm all about that health and longevity of life and all that living-related stuff.

If Saiku can make this, so can you

Alright so before I start, let me tell you one thing. You know how your mother/grandmother always said "this recipe was passed down to me by my mother bla bla bla her soul is in it"? That's dog shit. If that's true then her soul is plastered all over the internet.

Pears

Grab a pot and do a 40/60 vinegar/water ratio. Add some sugar, a bunch of cloves, one anise, and some cinnamon. This is Mexican cinnamon here. Bring to a boil.

Get your pears, peel them and cut into quarters. I don't have a picture of the pears because if you don't know how to peel a pear you've got problems that even Steemit can't fix.

Stick your pears into some water with lemon juice so they don't go all gray on you.

When water is boiled, fish those pears out and add them in. Leave them alone to simmer for a good 15 minutes.

Cracker

Go to the pantry and get all those little bags of remnants of various nuts and nut-dust. I've added a handful of chia seeds, a few handfuls of toasted sesame seeds, a bit of maca powder (not matcha powder, there's a difference you can read about), a few handfuls of hemp hearts and some flour. Mix all that, add some honey and coconut oil. Stick into the microwave for a few seconds to melt and mix.

Flatten on parchment paper.

Now here's the part I almost buggered up. This whole thing goes into the oven for about 10 minutes, but you've got to set the oven onto the lowest setting or if you're impatient like me, leave it on whatever the default is but with the door open. Extract the kids from the kitchen at this point.

Cut a rectangle out of the sheet, place on whatever presentable plate you own as so. Eat the rest.

The hardest part

Taking a decent picture is the hardest part of this whole challenge.

I'm lying. Adding that garnish was the hardest part. Use a tea measure to scoop a sexy dome of blue cheese. Then go get tweezers, like a pro, and add that garnish (this one is oregano).

No matter what I do the pictures don't turn out.

When consuming, you want to eat all the components at the same time, minus the garnish if desired.

I tried it. It is an amazing appetizer indeed.

Very good recipe, that seems delicious, thx for sharing

It was indeed delicious

The blue cheese is an interesting component. I've never heard of it paired with pear before. It's a very pretty dish.

It works well with the pear/anything vinegary/preserved. The rest that we've got left over is getting inserted into meatballs later tonight.

Beautiful dish! I love that you pickled the pear. And the cracker is great! The blue cheese makes the whole dish work perfectly!

thanks. Was trying to decide between poaching it and pickling it and the pickle won out.

Pear pickle is a great idea giving it such a nice taste my friend! Absolutely wonderful read from you again, i wonder where you get such lovely and funny words each time.
Thanks for the link of the maca, i was really not aware of this one.
Cheers!
