Hunter's comment

This is a modern and efficient system for people who want to grow some of their own food but don't have a garden or any other growing space.

It is a compact, modular and fully automated system that requires little attention or attendance other than setup, harvesting and cleanup ready for the next growing cycle.

The company producing the Nanofarms also provides a whole range of the 'Plant Pads' that are used for growing the crops.

These pads have the nutrients and seeds ready embedded. The range include quick growing salads, herbs like basil and cilantro, as well as wheatgrass, lettuce and a number of different microgreen mixes.

The products are all organic and fully compostable. The growing lamp is only 10 watts so will not use much electricity.

The Nanofarm starter module is US$ 379. The Plant Pads range in price from US$ 3.99 to $7.99. Each Plant Pad would likely produce enough crop for 3 or 4 days.

The initial cost of the Nanofarm and the fairly high ongoing costs of the Plant Pads make the economics versus store bought microgreens or salads marginal. However the convenience of having fresh organic homegrown crops at your fingertips, as well as a significant cool/showing off factor make this a 'would buy' for me if I lived in an apartment.

And if you really want to go big time you can stack at least four units together.

Sort:

Pros:

  • love that it is modular so you can choose how big a 'farm' according to your budget
  • love that it encourages people anywhere to grow - this can include schools or even old people's homes...
  • love that it can fit into a small place like a flat or even a small house.

Cons:

  • relies on having access to electricity (though probably it can be connected to solar as well)
  • works out more expensive than having your own set up - but if you don't have a choice at least it's something
