Can we trust third party apps with our login credentials?

I'm seeing a couple of mobile apps popping up for steemit but these apps are being created by third party developers so my question is how trustworthy are these developers? What's to stop them from stealing my information and taking all of my money? This industry is not regulated, what precautions are you guys taking when using these apps?
