Hi Steemit family!

Ansel Adams and his contribution to universal photography

Today we continue with another of the great photographers of all time, black and white photography has always fascinated me above all by the quality and visual impact, color photography brought with it a new world to explore, however documentary photography is still treated in black and white.

Born in the city of San Francisco in 1902, from a conservative family that was not very supportive of the cultural movement, although this was not the case in the past.

Today we will get closer to the life and work of Ansel Adams with me to learn more about this incredible photographer. Despite other problems such as dyslexia that made the young Adams very shy, he still took piano lessons and overcame his worst moments of his tormented adolescence.

Then he discovered his passion for art that would capture all his attention for the rest of his life, with only 19 years he was already linked to the world of photography by publishing in a magazine of photographs called The Sierra Club.

From that time he managed to establish the lines of what would be his style of photography, specializing in landscape photography, one of his first photos was Monolith, his impact was such that it would take him to make his first solo exhibition organized by The Sierra Club, and then get him to be the president of the same magazine.

His passion for the environment and ecology was the most important and central thing in his life, in love with the beauties of Yosemite Natural Park so much so that he became one of the faithful activists for the conservation of the park.

Then he knows direct photography and feels influenced by this genre so he decides to explore for a while, he was fascinated by the fact of breaking with the paradigms of traditional photography, as direct photography is not retouched the final product.

The excitement was so great that he spent time theorizing direct photography, so the F/64 group was formed where Edward Weston came together and focused on expanding the ideas of direct photography.

One of their main objectives was to use the closed diaphragm in 35mm format cameras in order to obtain sharper images. The only drawback was that they rejected other photographic styles because they did not represent purity, they said that photography had to be clean and that any interaction with manipulation was not valid.

The development of the technique was based on the system of zones that brought with it the advance in the exhibition of photography. Although it was little accepted by most photographers for being a little effective in most moments of photography in real life.

The positive side was that Adams invented a system to visualize how the photographs were going to look before they were developed, so he was able to decipher the tonal values by means of the photosensitive materials.

In order to better understand the process, it consists of measuring the light of different areas of the scene so that the photographer could know with certainty which areas of the photograph would be left with the values of gray.

source

This technique could revolutionize the world of photography, although many preferred a traditional method, the photographers dedicated to research saw in this learning a different way of doing photography.

Adams is a true bulwark of universal photography because of its contribution that today can be found in digital cameras by observing the diagram of the images.
