A little dive into science fiction (for now)

Two of the most exciting technology fields that have greatly advanced in recent years are blockchain and interplanetary space travel. Both are already game changing by themselves, but what if they succeed simultaneously?

The potential fields on which blockchain technology can be applied have only started to get explored, with the financial one being the most prominent at the moment. Nevertheless, the total market capitalization for cryptocurrencies has only scratched a tiny part of what has been managed by fiat money until now and we have already seen scalability issues.

Long transaction times and high fees are common on the main networks like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Workarounds and alternatives have been planned and even implemented, but none of them is widespread yet and there's no clear idea on which path will become the norm.

These issues are affecting blockchain networks that run on an internet that is still confined to earth, where information can get anywhere in less than a second. But what if Elon Musk's plans to colonize Mars come true?

SpaceX Mars Colony

Will Martian colonies be excluded from the internet? I doubt it, but let's remember that depending on the orbital position of both planets, the communication delay between Mars and Earth can surpass 20 minutes on just one way. Can you imagine trying to synchronize an interplanetary network?

There are still a lot of technological challenges to overcome before being able to see similar scenario, and lots of different solutions will come along the way. Maybe each planet can get a sub-network that latter gets synchronized with the other one or maybe new instant communication technologies are built on top of quantum mechanics. Tech will keep evolving at an incredible rate, that's for sure, otherwise how long would our friend Starman have to wait to confirm his transaction?
