Does asteroid collide with Earth today?

in #space7 years ago

The Earth appears to have a date with the passage of an asteroid larger than the blue whale near it, on Friday February 9, less than a fifth of the distance between our planet and the moon.

The asteroid "2018 CB" was first observed by NASA's Catalina Sky Survey near Tucson, Arizona, and is between 15 and 40 meters wide and is supposed to pass 64,000 kilometers from Earth at 22:30 GMT (1: 30 Moscow time).

NASA describes asteroids that pass 740,300 kilometers from the planet as "fairly dangerous". But confirmed that this asteroid would not pose a real threat to our planet.

"Although the 2018 CB is very small, it may be larger than the one that entered the Earth's atmosphere over Chelyabinsk in Russia in 2013," said Paul Chaudas, director of NASA's Near-Earth Objects Research Center.

At present, NASA will not be able to change the orbit of the asteroid if it is heading towards Earth, but it can mitigate potential impacts and take measures, which will protect lives and property.

A 19-meter meteorite entered the Earth's atmosphere in February 2013 and exploded in the Russian skies of Chelyabinsk, splitting into several parts, dispersing space debris and creating a powerful shock wave, estimated to equal the force of the 20 Hiroshima atomic bomb.
