THE BOY WHO SERVED

We served in the same quarters
Side by side we poured wine for our masters
Our dreams were great
yet our sufferings untold

But in us we had a fire
An unquenchable one
In his eyes i saw the burning desire
The future ready to unfold

He sat on the bare floor
Close to the tattered mat
His mouth sore
Having been beaten by our wicked master with a bat

I remember that look on his face
That little smirk he gave
Even as he was being dragged
We feared, for we thought it would be his last

Time passed
Years went by
Many had been sold
That boy exchanged for coal

He sat with the masters
What a fine gentleman, I thought
They laughed at his chatter
As if they had been bought
Then I saw it; that look in his eye
He was the boy who served
