Red Rock Canyon, Las Vegas Nevada

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

These are the Spring Mountains and the amber red Sandstone Bluffs of Red Rock canyon just west of Las Vegas, Nevada. On the far left of the image is Potosi Mountain rising above Cottonwood Valley and moving to the right we have Mount Wilson, Rainbow Mountain and Bridge Mountain. To the right of that on the horizon in the distance is Mount Charleston, cloaked in clouds.

The great sandstone cliffs at Red Rock, thousands of feet high, are Aztec Sandstone and are 180 – 190 million years old. They are the remains of ancient lithified sand dunes from a vast desert that covered a large part of the Jurassic southwest. Lithification is the process of changing unconsolidated sediment into sedimentary rock. The red color striping across some of the outcrops are from iron oxide or hematite when exposure to the elements caused iron minerals to oxidize or “rust,” resulting in red, orange, and brown-colored rocks.

I lensed this image of Red Rock Canyon as I was flying to the east of the formation in between rain storms.

Beautiful Place very much like Sedona, Arizona with the Red Rocks................

Always loved Red Rock - living out in Vegas, it was one of my favorite places to frequent on the weekends and hike :) What an incredible shot you took as well!

what camera did you use to take this?

follow me plzz i just followed you upvote for upvote

Oh wow that is some view you have there. What altitude were you at?

like ur pic. I have been there 3 times but u pic still make me feel amazing

The redness and orange vibrance caused by the corrosion of these iron minerals is so eye-catching! You captured the scene so beautifully in this photograph. The sky in which you dwell while taking these photos is presented in a very tranquil yet complex manner; the contrast between the blue sky and the rain-filled, heavy stratus clouds appealed to me the most :)

Great post @skypilot , Outstanding pictures. Would love to go there someday.

Lovely photo!
