Understanding Heliantheae: The Sunflower Tribe
Heliantheae, commonly referred to as the Sunflower Tribe, is one of the largest and most diverse tribes within the Asteraceae family, which is the largest family of flowering plants in terms of species diversity. This tribe contains some of the most familiar and economically important plants, including sunflowers, marigolds, zinnias, and many others that contribute significantly to horticulture, agriculture, and medicine.
Taxonomy and Classification
The Heliantheae tribe belongs to the Asteraceae family, which is also known as the Compositae due to its characteristic composite inflorescences. Within this tribe, there are approximately 190 genera and over 2,500 species. The tribe is named after its most iconic member, Helianthus annuus, commonly known as the sunflower. The name Heliantheae is derived from the Greek words "helios," meaning sun, and "anthos," meaning flower.
The tribe is divided into several subtribes, which further organize the vast number of genera and species. Some of the notable subtribes include:
Helianthinae: This subtribe contains the true sunflowers , as well as related genera like Tithoniaand Echinacea, which are known for their medicinal properties.
Coreopsidinae: Members of this subtribe, such as Coreopsis and Bidens, are popular ornamental plants.
Zinniinae: This subtribe includes the beloved garden flowers Zinnia, which are admired for their bright, showy blooms.
Milleriinae: This subtribe includes Galinsoga and Melampodium, which are often found in disturbed habitats and are known for their rapid growth and colonization abilities.
