Ovariectomy Increases the Risk of Colon Cancer
A recent Swedish study revealed that ovarian removal increases the risk of colorectal cancer.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and published Wednesday in the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The removal of ovaries changes the levels of sex hormones for women, according to the study. Colorectal cancer develops as a result of hormonal factors. The removal of the ovaries also changes the levels of sex hormones, which increases the risk significantly.
The study included 195,973 women who underwent ovarian removal surgery between 1965 and 2011.
