Tent Rocks National Monument is less than an hour southwest of Santa Fe, NM. The monuments name is derived from the term for white cliffs in the Keresan language of the Pueblo's. The Pueblos were the first ancestors who settled there around the 15th century.

Over six million years ago volcanic eruptions left layers of ash, pumice, and tuff. The residual pieces form caprocks, which being so soft are eroded rapidly. Over the years erosion from wind and water created the colored band of beige and gray and easily allowed rock to erode from underneath.
