I suspect he is correct when he blames our lack of viewing the heavens for a good part of the malaise of modern man.

I was intrigued by that thought process as well. Similar to the principle in evangelism where we talk about sin and our need before we share our Savior, it makes sense to understand our smallness in the universe before acknowledging the Creator of it all.
