Norway celebrated the Sami People’s National day t his week, more exactly February 6th.

The Sami population is estimated to be between 64.000–110.000. The Sami has its traditional settlements in Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia. In Norway there is no official record of who has Sami identity / background, and therefore no one knows exactly how many Sami it is. The estimated population in Norway is about 40.000. Only 1/3 speak one of the 3 Sami Language: North-Sami (Sápmi), Lule-Sami (Sábme) and South-Sami (Saepmie).

The Sami people (also known as the Sámi or the Saami) are a Finno-Ugric people inhabiting Sápmi, which today encompasses large parts of Norway and Sweden, northern parts of Finland, and the Murmansk Oblast of Russia. The Sami have historically been known in English as the Lapps or the Laplanders, but these terms can be perceived as derogatory. The Sami are the only indigenous people in Scandinavia that are recognized and protected under the international conventions of indigenous peoples, and are hence one of the northernmost indigenous people of Europe.[6] Sami ancestral lands are not well-defined. Their traditional languages are the Sami languages and are classified as a branch of the Uralic language family. [Source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people)

Another interesting article (unfortunately, only in Norwegian) about the Sami People.
