How to unlock your crashed iphone (if you opened a message with the indian-killer-character)

in #iphone7 years ago (edited)

A particular character of one of the Indian idioms crash applications on iOS and can even lead to an iPhone block. Unfortunately, the news has spread and with it the spread of this character between social networks and today's jokes that, in turn, they are re-sharing, aware that they can also create a serious inconvenience to users. Fortunately, waiting for a firmware update by Apple there are various remedies that can be put in place to limit the phenomenon.

First of all, we understand at what level the bug in question is acting, to understand remedies and solutions: the display of the font causes problems when displayed in elements of the UIKit framework such as TextField, Label and TextView.

This can crash the application that tries to render the character, as happens for example for Whatsapp, Telegram, social networks, etc. However, unfortunately, if the character is displayed by a notification, it is the entire springboard (which manages the entire display of the interface) to crash. At that point iPhone reboots and continues to reboot and goes into BootLoop. Unfortunately in this case who tried to forcibly reboot the iPhone (something to do, as we have already written) we saw the phone stuck on the apple, hopelessly.

We will see below how to solve the problem but first llet me show you how to avoid incurring this problem: install the latest public beta of iOS 11.3 (which does not suffer from this bug) or delete the preview of their notifications, until Apple releases a specific update.

To install a public beta you need to subscribe to the relevant Apple public beta program at this address: afterwards the site will indicate all the simple steps you need to take to install the relevant certificate on iPhone and then proceed with the update. Clearly the recommendations are the usual ones that you do for any beta, do it with awareness, be aware that it is not a stable version of the system and always make a backup beforehand!

If you do not want to complicate your life too much and prefer to stay in stable versions of iOS waiting for Apple fix the problem you can temporarily disable the preview of notifications: just go to Settings -> Notifications -> Show previews -> Never.

How to solve the crash problems of the main messaging applications:

If your iPhone has no problems but you can not access more to Whatsapp, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, etc ... the advice can be to access through a PC to Whatsapp Web, Telegram Web, etc ... and delete the "incriminated" chat. This way your phone will be back to full operation. There are those who were made to write by several contacts in order to "send down" the incriminated chat and other creative solutions. In general, as mentioned at the beginning of the article, any method that can not display the offending character will work because it is in the display of the same, as mentioned, that the crash occurs, the simple reception of the message is not enough.

How to solve iPhone and BootLoop crash problems:
Here too there are two ways to go: the first attempt to make is for the phones in BootLoop, which is the phone that keeps on restarting.

Access iCloud.com from a PC or any device
Locate the device with Find My iPhone and set the lost mode
Enter your phone number
You will receive a call, answer.
The iPhone will unlock
Cancel notifications
Disable preview (see above)
Try sometimes, if it does not work on the first try.

If, however, the iPhone is stuck on the symbol of the apple, not signs of life, is irretrievably blocked and does not respond in any way there is a last, extreme solution. That of recovering from iTunes from the PC in recovery mode.

Make sure that iTunes is updated to the latest version available and then follow the guide below, based on the device you own.
Here the guide for iPhone X and iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, here the guide for iPhone 7 and 7 Plus and here, however, for other iOS devices.

There is also another road, which deserves a try: if your terminal is in bootloop and not in full crash once the recovery mode has started, in front of the following screen, you can also try to update to the public beta of iOS 11.3 (trying to force the update you could avoid losing your data if you do not have a backup).
