The Screen Addict Recommends โ Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Two years ago, Netflix released a fresh screen adaptation of the classic anti-war novel ๐๐บ ๐ช๐ฒ๐๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ต๐๐ ๐ก๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ฎ๐ฎ), and I was thoroughly impressed. I would even go so far as to say that for me, Edward Bergerโs film is an instant close second to Spielbergโs ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐๐ฎ๐ป (๐ญ๐ต๐ต๐ด) in the overall War genre, and an undisputed number one when it comes to WWI films.
All due respect to the technical marvel that is Sam Mendesโs ๐ญ๐ต๐ญ๐ณ (๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ต) but in terms of narrative cinema I thought that film was a tad monotonous, to be brutally honest. Please donโt get me wrong, I am not saying ๐ญ๐ต๐ญ๐ณ is a bad film โ that is not for me alone to decide โ I am just stating my personal opinion.
What I missed in the US-UK production ๐ญ๐ต๐ญ๐ณ is more than made up for in the first completely German version of ๐๐ช๐ป๐ก. This is first class, epic storytelling โ who says European films cannot rival Hollywood blockbusters? In fact, ๐๐ช๐ป๐ก is quite simply one of the most beautifully shot and compellingly acted films about the horrors of war Iโve seen in a long while.
Seek it out & get your fix.
