The Screen Addict Recommends – Bulletproof Gangster a.k.a. Kill the Irishman (2011)

Very rarely do I stumble across a Gangster / Crime film that I haven’t seen yet. To discover one that stars some of my favorite actors to boot, would be almost inconceivable.

Yet this is exactly what happened when I got sucked into a YouTube algorithm rabbit-hole and was presented with a promo for 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗮𝗻, a mob movie based on the life of Irish mobster Danny Greene.

Starring Ray Stevenson, Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken and many more usual suspects of the Crime genre, 𝗞𝘁𝗜 definitely looks the part based on what we see in the trailer.

How did I miss this? I was probably aware of the film at some point, but simply got distracted. Whatever the reason, I’ve corrected the oversight.

Writer-director Jonathan Hensleigh – who also scripted 𝗔𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗼𝗻 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟴) and one of the best entries in the Die Hard franchise – clearly drew inspiration for 𝗞𝘁𝗜 from undisputed Gangster-classics like 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗳𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘀 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟬), 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗼 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟱) and 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘀 (𝟭𝟵𝟵𝟲), but that didn’t bother me one bit. What with hidden continuity, good artists copy great artists steal, etc.

Working with a limited budget, Hensleigh very cunningly splices in actual historic news-reports about “The Robin Hood of Collinwood” throughout the film, which makes the whole appear so much richer.

This is just a really well-made pic, and Stevenson is right on the money. It’s truly heartbreaking that the Celtic Bruiser is no longer with us.

In any event…

Seek it out & get your fix.
