Researchers at the National Institute of Materials Science have developed a metal alloy that could be the essential component to create these futuristic aircraft or even incredibly strong artificial muscles, the secret, an alloy made of titanium and nickel that combines the strength of steel with the flexibility of rubber, all in one material.


The idea of ​​shape-changing aircraft is fascinating, but there has always been a challenge, creating a material flexible enough to change shape and at the same time strong enough to withstand the demands of flight, usually when trying to increase flexibility. of a material its resistance is sacrificed, this inevitable exchange has been the biggest obstacle to transforming this futuristic concept into reality, however, researchers could have found a perfect solution. They discovered that an alloy of titanium and nickel has special properties.

This new alloy can not only stretch far beyond what other metal alloys can, but also has the ability to return to its original shape when heated, making it a promising candidate for creating structures that can transform under different conditions. However, there was a problem: these impressive properties only manifested themselves at very specific temperatures, which severely limited the possible applications of the alloy.


So the research team led by Professor Xiaobing Ren developed a three-stage process that solved this problem, allowing the alloy to exhibit these properties over a much wider range of temperatures, the result being a material that not only has strength comparable to steel. , but it is also 20 times more flexible than common metal alloys.


The method to create this alloy is relatively simple which means that it can be easily replicated in other laboratories or even applied on an Industrial scale, with this the development of shape-changing aircraft could finally come off paper and begin to take shape in the world real.
