Meet Paco! The most unique frog in Sucre

in #gardening6 years ago (edited)
Paco is a large frog that I was supposed to take care of for a few days, however, this "little" friend got used to living in my yard.

They are very common frogs in the cold regions of the Sucre state, usually in areas near rivers. Its scientific name is Leptodactylus turimiquensis, the specific name "turimiquensis" is due to the Turimiquire hill, south of Sucre.

Many aspects of this species are not known, but because they are part of the family Leptodactylidae and the genus Leptodactylus, they are frogs with strong limbs, which allow them to make long jumps.

They have smooth skin, and during the breeding season, the male beats with his legs the "gelatin" of the eggs expelled by the female, with these movements he manages to form a foam that pretends the eggs. This is why they are also known as foaming frogs. Another name they receive is that of pepper frogs, since by rubbing their skin they secrete a stinging substance.

This species is known throughout the Sucre state as a Chinagua Toad, and is a carnivorous species, an active predator of small amphibians; they can usually eat anything that fits in his mouth, but prefer small frogs. Yes, Paco eats little toads. Although we realized that he can also eat fish heads, so we feed them with these, because the small toads are not available throughout the year.

I really like amphibians, I think they are the most curious animals of all, and that is why I freed paco in an area near my house, where there are waterways and where frogs abound; but to my surprise, during the night of the same day, Paco was back in my yard, I suppose that here he finds a comfortable space with small plants that simulate his natural environment, easy food and he has even gotten used to bathing in the barrels of water that I use to water my plants.

Hope you like my little friend.
