The Young Musician

The young musician sat in class watching the clock and counting the minutes until he would be able to return to his piano and create the beautiful music that he loved to make. The time moved so slowly as the teacher muttered on about a topic of no interest to the budding musician.

The musician's imagination ran wild dreaming of adventurous harmonies and rhythms that he would discover on his journey as a musician. He visualized the scores of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart and all the other great composers whose music he was learning to play. There was so much music for him to learn. Enough to last many lifetimes and here he was wasting time on the mundane.

The minutes ticked by like molasses but eventually the final class of the day came to a close. The musician rushed out of the room at the ringing of the bell jumped on his bike and furiously pedaled home as quickly as he could. He felt relief and freedom as he sat down at the piano to practice the music he had be imagining earlier.

Soon his fingers danced across the keyboard as beautiful sonorities arose from the instrument. It was almost like magic to him. These black dots on the page contained such meaning and the capacity to arouse any emotion in a person yet it was something that not could be expressed in words. He was able to get a glimpse of history as he perused through the stacks of music which had be written over the past centuries. He felt this was his purpose and had great significance.

After he had spent several hours alone locked in his room he heard a knocking on the door. "Have you finished your homework?", his mother asked. "Not yet, but I will do it soon", he replied. And so he completed his assignments one after the other as fast as he could. In a hurried state he answered his math problems and wrote his history answers. Once his assignments were completed he felt that relief and excitement that had struck him earlier.

By now it was getting late and his practice time was coming to an end. The musician was told to go to sleep and so he did. He was filled with conflicting emotions of impatience and excitement. He knew he would have to wait until he was able to return to his music again but he also knew there was so much for him to learn and discover. The musician had dreams of wonder and creativity. He knew he was on the right path, for he felt deeply as Nietzsche had famously stated that "Without music, life would be a mistake".
