Our Friend the Cannibal

It should come as no surprise to anyone paying attention, but I will admit I was a bit shocked when I came across the trailer for “My Friend Dahmer”. As the title suggests, the movie is based on the high school years of America’s most famous cannibal killer, Jeffery Dahmer. Just weeks after finishing high school in June of 1978, Dahmer began his 13-year killing spree when he picked up a hitchhiker.

It’s not alarming that a studio would make a movie about the life of the infamous serial killer. Inquiry into such a life can provide insight. What is strange is the obvious portrayal of Dahmer in such a humanizing and sympathetic light, made immediately clear from the film’s title.

Further research into Dahmer just makes this all the more curious. In a 1991 television interview, Dahmer admitted his demonic desire to ‘…possess them permanently’ when refereeing to his victims. Dahmer’s intent was to turn his victims into controllable sex zombies. He was known to experiment with methods such as drilling holes through the skull and filling them with acid.

“It’s a process that doesn't happen overnight. When you depersonalize another person, and view them as just an object. An object of pleasure instead of a living breathing human being.”

In the same interview, Dahmer also refused to place blame society, his family or anyone but himself stating, “The person to blame is sitting right across from you.” As a character, this seems to make Dahmer difficult to connect with for most non-psychopaths.

Luckily the film and character of Dahmer both get a boost of charisma from heartthrob Disney alum Ross Lynch. The 21-year old actor/musician seems well positioned to introduce the joys of cannibalism to a fresh young crowd. It is apparent from Lynch’s own interview, how he embraced the role and what effect it had on him playing Dahmer.

Of course, a single movie is easily overlooked, but in recent months it almost appears that there is an effort to make cannibalism somewhat less taboo. CNN played its role in January 2017 when it sent Reza Aslan meet with the cannibal Aghori Hindu in segment called ‘Face to face with a cannibalistic sect’. Reza even apparently consumed human flesh.

All this after the leaked DNC emails had many asking questions about Maria Abramovic’s connection to power players and what really goes on at her ‘spirit cooking’ events.
