Facebook’s Crypto Destination

in #cryptocurrency6 years ago (edited)

I haven’t yet read any official details about Facebook Coin, so maybe I’m missing some info.

When thinking about what they might do, a lot of people have speculated that it would be a stable coin, which makes sense to me.

But the more I think about it, the more I’m reminded of Facebook’s core business model, which is advertising-focused. Other than increasing adoption and being one of the biggest money grabs, I don’t see what a stable coin would do for Facebook and their business model.

However, I am quite familiar with Brave Attention Tolen (BAT) and the Brave Browser. They represent one of the biggest threats to Facebook in the Attention Economy. I can definitely see a Facebook Coin playing a role in Attention and the incentivization of it.

Can you imagine the turnaround of PR and reputation if Facebook paid people to watch ads?

Can you imagine the bonus structures they might concoct to provide incentives for people to give them more data and more information about themselves, to get more appropriate ads?

Can you imagine how willing people will be to sell themselves, when they can get paid for something they’ve been happily doing for free?

Can you imagine Facebook coming out with a Facebook Browser, like Brave but using FBCoin instead of BAT?

Can you imagine Facebook (or Google) buying Brave?

I can.

This is a very reasonable outcome. Looking at underlying motivations, I don't see a FBCoin doing anything other than emboldening what their current business model is.
