It was the year 1817, back in Angostura, today Ciudad Bolivar, was ** El Libertador ** on the banks of the Orinoco River with a group of generals of his General Staff and some officers of his army, suddenly heard a conversation where an Officer he boasted of his ability as a swimmer and how easily he would reach two boats anchored 150 meters away; this Officer was Colonel Martell. Bolivar approaches and says: "I tied hands would come first Martell." Immediately he ordered that with his suspenders he tie his hands and be thrown into the water, the panic took over the officers who immediately launched several swimmers in defense of the Liberator. Both swimmers achieve the goal but the Liberator arrived much later than Martell after much difficulty.

Later he would explain what his intention was, he justifies himself in the motivational defense of his thesis: ** Always forward, never behind **

In 1817, in the middle of the campaign of Angostura, Bolivar orders his aide Diego Ibarra, saddled his horse and mounted to give some orders to the guard staff.
Ibarra knew Bolívar's horse well and before saddling he wanted to show off to the officers present about his ability as a rider, he boasted of jumping on the animal from the tail, passing over his head and falling on his feet, of course he did, only that at that moment El Libertador arrived who said that this was not exceptional and that he could do it equal or better than Ibarra; proceeded and in the first jump fell on the animal's neck receiving also a strong blow that silently endured, in the second attempt fell on the ears receiving a blow greater than the first, finally, on the third attempt achieved its goal.

The reason: ** "always a leader must demonstrate will and tenacity before his subordinates" **.

  1. It was June 4 and Bolivar, together with Generals Francisco de Paula Santander, Carlos Soublette and Jose Antonio Anzoategui planned the details of the passage through the Cordillera de los Andes, an unthinkable enterprise conceived to protect against surprise, reduce and dominate the troops of Commander Barreiro at the foot of the Andean mountain.

This type of actions only carried out by figures such as Aníbal, César and Alejandro Magno demanded, in addition to logistics, an unusual force of will, typical of leaders destined for immortality; this step on the Andes under an inclement cold, often taking water from the melting ice causing stomach damage in the soldiers of his army, soldiers without uniform, without shoes and without food but with the breath and the example of a great leader achieved after of 15 days of hardship, achieve its surprise objective and definitively defeat the Spanish army at the Battle of Boyacá.

This idea, typical of an exalted brain, signified the triumph that guaranteed the independence of the southern region, that is to say: The Current Peru, Ecuador and Bolivia.

  1. October 28, the day of San Simón, Bolívar is in Potosí, Bolivia, offering the flags of freedom to the South American people, the flame of love is lit and encouraged by the beauty of the beautiful Maria Joaquina Costas, another of her follies, This lady was the wife of the Argentine general Hilarion de la Quintana and gave birth to a boy baptized with the name of Simón José de la Trinidad Costas.

That night a dance is offered in honor of the Liberator, the evening is in the Casa de la Moneda where the band of Hussars of Colombia entertains such a select invitation, all the Peruvian aristocracy is present and in the middle of the party The Liberator observes as one of his officers, General José Laurencio Silva, is rejected by some ladies present who do not accept to dance with the dark Venezuelan officer.

Without fanfare or stridency The Liberator, dressed in a party suit and wearing on his chest the medal of Washington that he loved so much, ordered to stop the music and from the center of the room he expressed in a loud voice: "General José Laurencio Silva, hero of a thousand battles and savior of the Fatherland, would grant me the highest honor of dancing with you? the applause surpassed the music and from that moment General Silva and everyone present danced all night.

These anecdotes are part of some personal follies of the Liberator Simón Bolívar that I am pleased to share with you.
