First transplanting

in #bonsai7 years ago

This elm is roughly 40yrs old. This is the first time I have transplanted this tree since purchasing it last year. 047313A6-2F2B-4048-BCC4-110723B9CA0E.jpeg
The first step is to remove a good amount of old soil and large roots, without completely bare rooting the tree.7AADBBBC-2D6C-44A9-8DB5-B47160ADA4F1.jpeg3C202B04-6445-4600-9E4C-BFA350906FAD.jpeg
I prepared the pot with drainage mesh and tie down wires. My soil is a mix of lava, pumice, and akadama in a ratio of roughly 1/1/1A46DC26D-D8C9-4630-89E0-4A5BE06E2175.jpegF72F030A-E796-40FB-A893-34BFCA9743B0.jpeg
The final steps are to fill in air pockets with a chopstick, tie down the tree and top dress the soil with a smaller particle size of the same soil mix or sifted sphagnum moss. E7F8A6A0-BB9F-4DF6-8AE5-CCB88C7D3EAB.jpeg
Aftercare will be to put plant in a shady area and keep the soil moist for the next few weeks.5BBAEF3B-38E7-41CE-8A39-1FDF33127875.jpeg
