Some time ago I posted the first two drawings of the new series 'MAGNUS OPUS - Pieces of resistance.'
Collage drawings as usual, this time inspired by revolutionary, non-conventional operas . Here's the process/construction of the third one...
Introduction:
NORMA BY VINCENZO BELLINI - THE OPERA
The choice to make drawings about librettos of operas isn't really that hard to find. Because my family, on mother's side, all worked in the Flemish Opera. So I grew up with it...
In addition, just like the Greek mythology (see my previous drawings series: Mythos) these stories have always interested me. It's the dramaturgy and the poetry of the raw edge of life that often shows the nullity and vulnerability of man. And those are aspects that intrigue me enormously.
But ok, so far my fascination and motivation.

And to get into the atmosphere somewhat, here is the aria from the opera: 'Casta diva' performed by Joan Sutherland (with subtitles)
PROCESS STEPS: From collage -concept to sketch... to finished drawing.
Cutting collage + quick sketch on writing paper.
Line drawing to determine the composition
First completion (indication) of the darkest parts. built with the hatch technique, line by line
Close up - Detail
First layer of the darkest parts
The lines and perforation holes of the writing paper
Subsequently, the lines that run through the drawing are taped and erased
Left: erased lines. Right:Second layer black (between the erased lines)

So much for the drawing ...
Or, to put it another way, the general basis is set, only ... it still need some-thing, so it's not quite ready yet. But at the moment I don't see it, so I start with a next one and from experience I know that it will come naturally.
So for now, the result... so far!

50x68cm on hardboard
Used materials:
Collage: cutter, knife and glue
Pencils: 2B - 4B - 6B - 8B
Writing paper
Raw watercolor paper.
Realization time: 18 days.

I think you made a very complete post, explained the reason for your art and each step. The opera is a very interesting art, it is a strong voice but with melody and that is not for everyone, it is for people who know how to appreciate the opera very well. I like the facial expression, it is something abrupt but with a look with a lot of life. Excellent post, greetings.
Opera has many interesting aspects, but as you said; it's not for everyone.
And I am one of the lucky ones who can dive in it and yes, even lose myself totally. But that's because, as I write in my post, my ear are 'formed' in my upbringing.
Fortunately, you don't have to be an opera lover to enjoy the drawing(s).
